What are GMOs?

GMOs start off as seeds in a laboratory, where scientists genetically modify them using DNA from bacteria, viruses, plants and animals. The seeds are altered to produce a super species designed to generate a higher crop yield.

Soy is one of the most prevalent genetically altered crops on the market, containing a gene derived from soil bacteria. This gene was introduced to encourage plant growth, while withstanding the application of herbicides and pesticides.

Are GMOs safe to eat?

Health Canada has approved the safety of a list of GMOs, including corn, potatoes, and wheat. GMOs in Canada, however, do not have to be labeled as such.

But because these ingredients are ubiquitously used in processed products, such as canned soup, baby formula, and frozen food, it’s difficult to know exactly what foods contain GMOs.

Meanwhile, other countries around the world – including all of Europe – have strict GMO regulations that require labeling to protect the health of consumers and the environment.

Why are GMOs harmful?

GMOs are a relatively new biotechnology. Coupled with the fact that their regulation is minimal, the proliferation of genetically modified crops is cause for concern.

Health risks, such as a rise in allergies, are being linked to GMOs. The mono-crop cultivation of GMOs is also said to encouragesuperbugs and superweeds, which can pose a risk to our environment and the integrity of our food.
