“It’s a great question, and one that needs to be clarified,” says Ian Hawes of Tofutti. “Many people assume that because our products do not contain dairy, they will last several months, but this is not the case. The ‘best before’ date on the package represents the last date an unopened product should remain on the grocery store shelf. As recommended on the Tofutti website, once the product has been opened, it should be used within a reasonable amount of time.
“Several factors come into play to determine the shelf life of our dairy-free cheese products after they have been opened. Factors such as how long they have been left out of the fridge, how often the product has been used, how many times someone has put a utensil into the container – and whether or not someone may have licked the utensil they used and then put it back into the container (we know – we all do it from time to time). If properly refrigerated, Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese and Sour Supreme should last at least 10 to 14 days. Customers should monitor Tofutti products as they would any other refrigerated perishable product and be guided by personal observations and caution.”
