With football season well underway, weekends just got lazier. And if the television has taken centre stage on Sundays in your home, you’ll need some satisfying comfort food to sustain the game-day crowd gathered around the screen.
For those in your family who aren’t fans of dairy, due to a milk allergy or intolerance,you’ll have to think twice about the snacks you serve. However, dairy-free finger-foodsdon’t have to be a game changer.
In fact, with some simple modifications to your menu, you can serve up a spread that’s guaranteed to win you points with minimal hassle, and very little added preparation time.
Game-day Grinders
Hot and spicy grinders garnished withmouth-watering, melted faux mozzarella are must-haves while watching the game. For a vegan version of the same sandwich, substitute the sausage with your favourite soy-based veggie ground.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp. olive oil
3 Italian sausages, casing removed
.5 kg (1 lb) ground beef
445 ml (15 oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 tbsp. dried Italian seasoning
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. crushed red chili pepper
1 sweet onion, sliced
6 cloves garlic, minced
10 hoagie buns, split
Mozzarella-style Tofutti Soy Cheese Slices
1 jar pickled banana peppers, sliced
Directions:
In an oiled skillet over medium-high heat, stir in the sausage and ground beef, canned tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt and crushed chili pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, until the mixture has thickened.
Meanwhile, sauté the onion and garlic in an oiled pan until tender, seasoning to taste.To assemble each sandwich, place the meat mixture into the split buns. Slap a Tofutti cheese slice on top of each one, and warm in the oven. Garnish with onions, garlic and pickled banana peppers.
Touchdown Nachos
An ooey-gooey crowd-pleaser, nachos make for tasty game-day grub. Plus, they can be made in no time, and are also vegan-friendly – a win-win for everyone.
Ingredients:
1 bag restaurant-style tortilla chips
American-style Tofutti Soy Cheese Slices
435 g can refried beans
Salsa, homemade or store-bought
Guacamole, homemade or store-bought
Toffuti Sour Supreme
Preheat the ovento 175 C (350 F). On a large baking tray, layer the chips and dairy-free cheese slices, and top with refried beans. Bake until cheese is melted. Serve with salsa, guacamole, and Tofutti Sour Supreme, and enjoy!
